The Juba Link Guest House

The website was created for the Link by Matt Stacey who very kindly did all the work free of charge but requested a small donation to go to his favourite charity. We are now able to update the website regularly ourselves and Matt is extremely supportive with ongoing help and advice. The Link is still raising funds as a further £40,000 is required but the architect/builder has promised to complete in the next few weeks so that we can start getting rent which will assist towards the repayments. The Ministry of Health(Republic of South Sudan) will also help with funding but due to the oil crisis money is not readily available at present. We are making a final push towards funding raising for this building which will make a critical difference to the sustainability of the Link. A protocol is being developed for use of the guest house, charges, etc.

The Government of the Republic of South Sudan no longer wishes anyone to have the flag on official letterheads. We therefore took the opportunity to completely redesign something simple and cheaper to print and reproduce. The design was kindly produced by Link member Dr Fiona Henderson.
New Executive Team
Following the Link AGM on the 12th April 2012 Liz Mackenzie was voted in as the Chair and a new Executive Team was formed. Tim Walsh, after being the Lead and Chairman for the last 5 years, wished to step down. The new team is as follows:

* Liz has been a Non Executive Director of the Isle of Wight PCT for a number of years. She has just taken up the position of Lay Advisor to the new Clinical Commissioning Group for the Island. She is a lay advisor to the Wessex Deanery.
Basic Medical Training Programme
Members of the Juba Link, working under the umbrella of the Wessex Consortium, and with senior doctors in Juba to get a basic medical training programme up and running by March 2013. Much work has gone into writing the curriculum and discussing with the local doctors in Juba exactly what they want from this programme. It is designed as a 2 year training to include Medicine, Surgery, Obs & Gynae and Paediatrics and hopefully with modules on mental health and anaesthesia.
Once up and running the programme will need senior trainers to go and teach for 2 to 3 weeks at a time within the specialties concerned. However, for the time being these trainers will have to self fund although accommodation should now be available free of charge.
Training the Trainers Course
A 3 day Training the Trainers Course (19th-21st November 2012) was organised in conjunction with the Ministry of Health (RoSS) and Dr Oromo, Consultant Pathologist in Juba and the Wessex Consortium as a starter towards the Basic Medical Training Programme. Tim Walsh led the team with Dr Rich Bregazzi, an Educationalist and Dr David Attwood, a Medical Registrar.
There were 18 participants, who were Consultants in various specialties at Juba Teaching Hospital.
The objective was to provide the training that trainers would need to develop and deliver structured and validated postgraduate medical education in RoSS.
The programme was opened by the Minister of Health – Dr Michael Milli Hussein, the Undersecretary for Health – Dr Makur Kariom and the WHO Representative in Juba.
The first 21/2 days of the course covered areas such as educational roles and supervision, qualities of good trainers, workplace based learning, teaching techniques in different settings, appraisal and assessment and responding to underperformance but modified for the needs of trainers in South Sudan.
The last afternoon was devoted to a plenary session on the practicalities of setting up Postgraduate Medical Education and Training for doctors in South Sudan. It was agreed that the local Consultants, supported by the Consortium and Juba Link, would develop a 2 year programme for newly qualified doctors aimed at providing the training necessary to enable them to work effectively at the District level, including providing supervision to the Medical Assistants. Much of the preliminary work has been done and this programme is planned to start in March/April 2013.
In our view the Basic Medical Training Programme is a very important starting point. There is also a need to address the training needs of Medical Officers who have gone beyond the basic programme and in the longer term there will be the issue of specialist training. There was also a very strong desire for the development of a College of Physicians and Surgeons to have an over-arching role in the development of postgraduate medical education.
Overall, the course and the visit were extremely successful and generated much enthusiasm. We also had meetings with the University of Juba Medical School and the Minister of Health and there is very strong support locally at all levels for this initiative.
A nursing/midwifery group has formed in the Wessex region and its members come from the Wessex Deanery, Poole Hospital, St Mary’s Hospital (IoW), Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, Bournemouth University and Southampton University. Two meetings were held in 2012 and discussion revolved around linking with Janet Michael (Director of Nursing & Midwifery – MoH RoSS ) as it was unclear where the real priorities for RoSS lay. For the work of the UK projects to be sustainable, this needed to be established. Some development opportunities for Janet Michael in the UK could be considered.
The poor level of general education in the country limits nurse education and so it was felt appropriate that a skills-based (EN style) curriculum was promoted but suited to the context. All project teams had developed good resources and it would be valuable to share these to save effort and to promote a consistent approach. It was proposed to investigate an IT platform to store and share educational materials.
Regulation of nursing was seen as a priority, as well as leadership education for the current RN workforce. The members felt that this could be more effectively influenced if they worked together as one group. It was proposed that the group should be known as the UK-South Sudan Nursing and Midwifery Link. Certificates were highly ‘prized’ in South Sudan and so it was agreed to share a template for these with the joint group recognised as well as the participant members.
It is hoped that a Juba Link nursing visit will take place sometime this year but fundraising is essential to support all visits.
A total of £17,974 was raised during 2012. This was thanks to events which ranged from a charity auction organised by Sharon Bennett which raised £2,500 to a table top sale organised by supporter Mary Thomas raising £1,052 and the Jubalink triathlon team of Zorina Walsh and David Redstone and Lisa King which raised a further £1,300. A small number of significant donations and grants were also received for which the Link is truly grateful to all those concerned. The Link would also like to thank all Members and Friends for their continued support without which we would not have been able to make the progress that has been achieved.
The momentum for fundraising needs to be maintained in the coming year in order to enable payment for the Juba Link guesthouse to be settled, the Basic Medical Training Programme to get off the ground and nursing/midwifery training to be supported through the Juba College of Nursing and Midwifery.
